Immerse yourself in the captivating melodies of Brazilian Choro music. Experience the warmth and conviviality it evokes together. Choro (pronounced Sjoro) means "cry" or "cry". It is an instrumental genre that originated in 19th-century Rio de Janeiro. It is characterised by fast and joyful rhythms, virtuosity, improvisation and subtle modulations. Despite its name, its melodies are enchanting. It is the first typical Brazilian genre of urban popular music, played by "serenadores" known as "Chorões".

At this concert, some of the few and best artists of the genre in the Netherlands will play. It consists of a rhythm section of guitar and or cavaquinho (a small metal string Brazilian guitar) plus a pandeiro (a percussion instrument), and soloists, in this case oboe and mandolin. Like Jazz, Choro reflects a fusion of European and African musical styles, incorporating genres such as polka, waltz and habanera. Initially enjoyed at informal gatherings, it has gradually gained popularity through records and radio. Today, Choro remains a vibrant part of Brazilian culture. After the concert, you can stay for a Roda de Choro (a jam session) that includes similar repertoire but in an informal setting where amateurs and students from the Choro school will join in.

Splendor can only be the independent and free hub that it is, thanks to the members who support us. We pay them back with our specialty: music. Every year, all Splendor musicians play one concert that's free for this crucial group to whom Splendor owes its everyday existence. Combined with many other events, this means that our members have free entrance to about 80 concerts a year for €9,99 p/m (and €4,99 p/m for minima and students!) – and receive a discount for all other concerts. Pretty good deal, right?

The members enable Splendor to remain independent, which is the only way to secure real freedom in programming, experimentation, risk-taking and the promotion of young, upcoming artists.
