Early Ukrainian & Dutch Animation 1920–1930s
The Ukrainian Cinema Club in Amsterdam, with the support of the Ukrainian Institute, will present a selection of early Ukrainian and Dutch animation with contemporary musical accompaniment.
The Ukrainian part is presented by Multagitprop, Ukrainian avant-garde animated films from the 1920s, collected, attributed, and restored by the Dovzhenko Centre. The selection includes “multiplicates,” feuilletons, and advertising film trailers. Often anonymous, they have been preserved as part of chronicle film journals from 1929–1930.
The Dutch program consists of films by George Debels, a pioneer of Dutch animation, who created his first animated works in the 1910s and has since worked on animation and advertising films. The selection of Debels films includes both his artistic and advertising works.
The films are accompanied by a hybrid live set by:
Maxym Liutenko (yi.collective) & Vitalii Nemchenko (20ft Radio).
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion in which the parallels and contrasts between Ukrainian and Dutch early animation will be explored - tracing artistic influences, shared techniques, and the cultural contexts that shaped the development of visual storytelling in both countries.
