Preview - People Don't See Things
Interviews with genocide scholarsDe wereld telt ongeveer 500 genocide-wetenschappers. Andrea Voets interviewde elf van hen het het afgelopen jaar, in aanloop naar de productie People Don’t See Things. Deze avond kijken we voor het eerst gezamenlijk naar wat zij de wereld te vertellen hebben. English-only, enkel interviews, geen muziek.
Globally, approximately five hundred academics specialise in the study of genocide. They create a map that predicts genocides, reconstruct the emotional life in concentration camps and bring us concepts like perpetrator-victim-cycles, implicated subjects or post-genocidal societies. These people study the events that few dare to confront in such detail, and place them within the framework of humanity itself.
In 2027, Splendor musician Andrea Voets and her company Resonate Productions will make the existential dimension of comparative, global genocide studies physically palpable, by creating an evening of electronic music and visuals in which 11 genocide scholars are the stars of the night. They are present on film and speak to the highest academic standards: every word they say has been peer-reviewed.
After years of preparation, the edit of their interviews is now ready. We are organising a viewing of these interviews -without music-, to feel the effect it has on people for the first time in a shared room.
The interviews have been conducted and edited by Andrea Voets in her usual style: a deep dissection towards the core of their thinking and its moral implications for all humans, without steering to any particular conclusion.
The scholars draw the universal principles that fuel mass murder into the here and the now, without exploiting any gruesome images or mining any personal trauma.
Join us this evening to learn from them for the first time, and talk with the artists and each other afterwards about what you have experienced during the viewing.
The evening will consist of the 12 scenes with the following titles:
1. Genocide // 2. Winning Team // 3. Fear/Trust // 4. Good People // 5. Opportunity // 6. Techniques // 7. Choice // 8. Death // 9. Ethical Loneliness // 10. Courts // 11. Graves // 12. Life
You can enter and exit freely during the evening. Latecomers will be let in at the start of each scene, up until the start of scene 7.
The evening starts at 19u30, around 21u30 we will have seen all the scenes and after that, there will be enough time to have a drink and talk about what we have just witnessed together.
If during the viewing you feel the need to step out and talk to someone: Andrea will step outside with you.
The scholars speak in English and there will be no subtitles.
Making any sort of recordings is strictly not allowed.
