Ties Mellema & Barry Jurjus
After a long and impressive career, Splendor musician and saxophone virtuoso Ties Mellema recently decided to completely change his artistic direction. In 2015 he fell seriously ill for a number of years, and in the process that followed he decided to devote himself to composing and electronics beside playing the saxophone. Writig his own music proved such a joy, that he decided to shift gears and exclusively do 'his own thing'. After 20 years of playing in the Amstel Quartet which he co-founded, and receiving numerous awards including the prestigious Netherlands Music Prize, he embarked on a new path as a musician and artist, characterised by the continuous exploration of the fringes of music. By now, Ties sees himself first and foremost as a musician: “I don’t do styles; I play music. Not classical, not jazz, not pop, but any music that speaks to me and is a true expression of something. I am particularly curious about the music that lies between the styles.”
Today, Ties presents the harvest of his past months of creative explorations. We'll be hearing new music by PEAX, the electronic duo with percussionist/drummer Barry Jurjus that draws inspiration from styles as varied as minimal, funk, jazz, baroque, avant-garde and drum and bass.
Ties Mellema has an Eppelsheim bass saxophone on loan from the collection of The Dutch Musical Instruments Foundation.

Member concert
Splendor can only be the independent and free hub that it is, thanks to the members who support us. We pay them back with our specialty: music. Every year, all Splendor musicians play one concert that's free for this crucial group to whom Splendor owes its everyday existence. Combined with many other events, this means that our members have free entrance to about 80 concerts a year for €9,99 p/m (and €4,99 p/m for minima and students!) – and receive a discount for all other concerts. The members enable Splendor to remain independent, which is the only way to secure real freedom in programming, experimentation, risk-taking and the promotion of young, upcoming artists. If you can think of another place without a central programming, where last-minute concerts can be planned any moment, where there is no backstage and artists and audience are constantly mingling and hanging out at the bar, where mysterious creative outbursts can be presented that are often labeled 'too risky' elsewhere, and that still guarantees high quality by unleashing the best of The Netherlands' music scene in this creative playground – you get a free membership!
