Yiddish Jazz
A musical journey (and a brand new CD!)
With this concert, Mirjam van Dam presents her new CD 'Yiddish Jazz’. She combines Jazz music with Yiddish music, and gives an overview of music history. Jews in Europe and in the Russian Empire, used to make Yiddish folk music. But after they fled for pogroms, they emigrated to America and many started working in the music business on New Yorks Lower Eastside. They even cooperated with black jazz musicians in times of strict segregation. The Jewish influence on Jazz music is clearly present in many songs of the American Songbook. During the concert, Mirjam will explain a lot about the songs.
