Frances-Marie Uitti & Claron McFadden: Prelude to a Trilogy

“Once Upon a Time, FM and CM walk into a Bar…”

Cellist Frances-Marie Uitti and vocalist Claron McFadden can both be described as among the most prolific, creative, and adventurous musicians of our time. They have known and admired each other for a very long time, but have never had the opportunity to work together. Now, in Splendor, they will open the door to a new musical collaboration: CM, one of the founding musicians and FM, Splendor’s brand new Artist in Residence.

Together, they will spend three days exploring, brainstorming, improvising, co-creating, and slowly giving shape to their series of three concerts inspired by texts from Dante’s poetic correspondence (or: Tenzone) with his childhood friend Forese Donati: a series of playful sonnets which take the form of exchanged insults. Also, they will dive into a new rendering of Italian popular songs called “Stornelli" (but in CM and FM's case, they will be "storti", or: distorted).

FM and CM invite you to join them in this first event: an informal sharing of the inner workings and fruits of those first three days of explorations, a “Prelude to a Trilogy”!

Splendor musician Claron McFadden doesn't only possess a mesmerising voice with which she leaves worldwide audiences in awe wherever she takes the stage (whether she sings early baroque or the latest compositions that often were written especially for her) – she also holds an investigative and philosophical curiosity about the world, always searching for wonderful new people to meet, possibilities to learn, and inspiration to create. Claron can pop up in the main programming of the Holland Festival, in an underground jazz bar, in a multidisciplinary experimental theatre piece, in a squat club, or in a music theatre performance that she herself inititiated: and wherever you encounter her, she is guaranteed to blow your mind while at the same time make you feel as comfortable and joyful as in your own home.

With a ceaseless curiosity to conjure ever more possibilities from her cello – for example by playing with two bows, or by inventing entirely new instruments such as the all sensor 12 string double bridged celloFrances-Marie Uitti has inspired leading composers such as György Kurtág, Luigi Nono, and Jonathan Harvey to write new music especially for her. Frances-Marie is Splendor's brand new Artist in Residence for a year.
"The spectacularly gifted cellist Frances-Marie Uitti has made a career out of demolishing musical boundaries. She has developed new techniques (most famously, playing with two bows simultaneously), collaborated with a who's who of contemporary composers, and pushed the cello into realms of unexpected beauty and expression...."
